"Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall because it had its foundation on the rock."
-- Matthew 7:24-25

The First Baptist Church of Havre de Grace, Maryland, has a rich history.

It was started as a Sunday School by Professor Robert W. Eubank on April 3, 1887. The Sunday School continued until Professor Eubank, principal of the local school at the time, transferred to Baltimore, Maryland, in 1892.

Rev. W.D. Quattlebaum of South Carolina came to Havre de Grace in 1907. Building on the foundation already laid, he started holding services in the city park and the old Willou Theater. As the interest grew, it was felt there should be a Baptist church in this community. Organized in 1908 under the leadership of Rev. Quattlebaum, the First Baptist Church of Havre de Grace constituted on April 11, 1909. It was the only Baptist church in Harford and Cecil counties at the time.

The present church building, at the corner of Congress Avenue and Stokes Street, was constructed from Port Deposit granite. The cornerstone was laid on October 13, 1912, and the building was completed and dedicated in 1913. The beautiful stained glass window in the rear of the sanctuary was a gift from Miss Lulu K. Eubank. It was dedicated to the memory of her parents, pioneers of the Baptist work in Havre de Grace.

Eleven pastors and several associate staff members have served the church since 1908. Other churches organized under the guidance of First Baptist include churches at Conowingo, Perryville, Aberdeen, Upper Cross Roads, Bel Air (Oak Grove Baptist Church) and Wrightsdale, Pennsylvania. A Sunday School program, missions, music and youth programs, community involvement, and an emphasis on gospel preaching have always been important aspects of the church's ministry.

The sanctuary is located at the intersection of Congress Ave. and Stokes St.

Currently, the church owns property north of Havre de Grace where the parsonage is located. Our present plans are to take the church beyond the four walls so to speak. We are developing home-based Bible study and fellowship groups. If the Lord is leading you to commit yourself to Him, to His work, and to join with this fellowship, we invite you to investigate what He may have for you here, at this exciting time in our church's history.

More information on joining First Baptist is available online, or you may contact us by phone at (410) 939-5233 or by email at info@fbchdg.org.

First Baptist Church's Offices are currently located adjacent to Fellowship Hall.
